Job Overview:
The Data Collection Officer position is crucial in addressing the evolving challenges of migration in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the context of vulnerable populations affected by economic, political, and environmental factors. The officer will be responsible for collecting and analyzing migration data to support evidence-based policy formulation and effective migration management.

This role involves participating in training sessions, conducting interviews, and utilizing data collection tools to gather relevant information from various sources. The officer will also ensure compliance with IOM’s guidelines and maintain high standards of data quality and accuracy. The position requires a proactive approach to liaising with different stakeholders, including humanitarian partners and community members, to facilitate effective data collection and reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Data Collection Officer will undertake a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: participating in training sessions to enhance data collection skills; engaging in Participatory Mapping Exercises (PME); identifying appropriate sources of information and target respondents for data collection; adhering to assessment deadlines as outlined by IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) guidelines; conducting interviews and collecting data at designated points; entering collected data into specified templates or mobile applications;

Ensuring the accuracy of data entry; processing and examining data to maintain quality; synchronizing data collection within agreed timelines; building relationships with various data sources, including humanitarian partners and community members; providing weekly reports on activities and challenges to the DTM Supervisor; and ensuring compliance with IOM’s Data Protection Principles while promoting gender mainstreaming throughout all activities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of a Diploma in Statistics, Social Science, Community Development, ICT, Disaster Risk Management, or other relevant fields. Additionally, candidates should have proven experience in DTM flow monitoring and data collection related to forced migration, such as displacement. Familiarity with electronic data collection tools, particularly KOBO Collect, is essential. Experience working with UN agencies, international organizations, and government entities is highly desirable. The ability to work independently in remote areas with minimal supervision is also required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a minimum of a Diploma in relevant fields such as Statistics, Social Science, Community Development, ICT, or Disaster Risk Management. Higher qualifications may be preferred, but a strong foundation in data collection and analysis is critical for success in this role.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in data collection, particularly in the context of migration and displacement. Experience with DTM flow monitoring is a must, as well as familiarity with electronic data collection tools like KOBO Collect. Previous work experience with UN agencies, international organizations, or government bodies will be advantageous, as it demonstrates the ability to navigate complex data environments and collaborate with various stakeholders effectively.

Languages:
